Toothaches and abscessed teeth can be the most painful situations you’ll ever experience. That’s why it’s important to see an endodontic specialist fast when you are experiencing symptoms of advanced tooth decay.
What is an Endodontist? An endodontist is a dentist who has received an additional 2 years of advanced education in the field of dental nerve therapy. At Union Square Dental, we have a board certified endodontist on staff to provide expert root canals to our patients. Our endodontic specialist can provide both routine as well as more complex root canals right here in our office, without referring you across town.
Why Would a Tooth Need a Root Canal?
Your smile could need complex nerve treatment if you have a large cavity or an injury that has caused damage to the sensitive tissues inside of the tooth. When this happens, your tooth becomes infected and an abscess may develop along the gums.
To save your tooth, our endodontist would need to perform a root canal. In some cases, such as a fracture down the root, your tooth may be past the point of repair. The only option at that point, would be to have the tooth extracted.
Comfortable Root Canals
Our endodontist will numb your tooth to prevent any sensitivity. Then, an access point will be created from the top of your tooth to open the pulp chamber. Instruments are used to clean the infection from the canals. Next, a filling material called gutta-percha is placed inside of the tooth to help prevent future infections.
Sometimes a post is set inside to help support the tooth. At the top, a temporary filling is placed to seal the tooth closed. We will place a permanent crown over the tooth at a follow up visit.
