What are dentures?

Are there different types of dentures?

Complete removable dentures

If you’ve lost most or all of your permanent teeth, your dentist might recommend complete removable dentures. Complete dentures attach to a plate that sits on top of your gums. The plates and gum fittings match the color of your natural gums and blend in with your surrounding oral tissue. To hold your complete dentures in place, you use a denture adhesive. 

Partial dentures

If you still have healthy, permanent teeth, your dentist might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures usually feature a metal framework attached to a clasp. This unique design restores the physical appearance of your smile while providing a sturdy foundation. This means your dentures won’t slip and slide around or negatively impact your speech.  

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures attach to dental implants. Because implant-supported dentures snap in place, you don’t have to use adhesive strips or pastes to retain their stability. Implant-supported dentures are the longest lasting and most comfortable denture option.

How do I care for my dentures?

The way you care for your dentures depends on the type of dentures. However, it’s important to follow your provider’s care instructions as closely as possible. This means cleaning your dentures with a soft-bristle toothbrush, soaking them overnight in an approved cleaning solution, and avoiding bad habits like chewing on ice or biting your fingernails.
