Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is an excellent way to make your dental experience easier, enjoyable, and relaxing. It involves the use of medical sedatives, like local anesthesia or nitrous oxide gas, to minimize pain, discomfort, and anxiety during dental procedures.

Is sedation dentistry for me?

Sedation dentistry can improve anybody’s experience at the dentist. Some patients suffer from severe anxiety that prevents them from seeking proper care for their dental needs. For these patients, sedation dentistry is absolutely essential to keeping their oral health optimized.

Even if you’re only a mildly anxious person or don’t suffer from dental phobias, sedation dentistry can still enhance your experience. The team at Union Square Dental is well-versed in providing sedation that’s safe and effective.

How does sedation dentistry work?

Union Square Dental offers two types of sedation:

Local anesthetic

Local anesthetic is an injection that your dentist administers in the specific area of your mouth that’s receiving treatment. They typically apply a topical anesthetic to make your gums or oral tissues slightly numb before injecting you with the syringe, so the whole process is virtually painless. Local anesthetic takes effect within a matter of minutes, keeps the injection site numb throughout your entire procedure. It wears off naturally within a few hours.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a gaseous sedative inhaled through your nose for the duration of your procedure. Your dentist places a small mask over your nose and asks you to breathe regularly. Within a matter of minutes, the sedative will take effect, and you’ll experience a tingly, floating sensation.

You stay conscious and aware throughout your procedure but in an enhanced state of relaxation. As soon as your procedure is over, your dentist pumps pure oxygen into the mask, which flushes the nitrous oxide from your system. The effects wear off in just a few minutes.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can benefit your dental experience in several ways, including:

  • Keeping you calm and relaxed during your trip to the dentist
  • Helping your dentist to complete your treatments successfully
  • Enabling your dentist to perform complex or multiple treatments in a single visit
